How We Met: We met in Pennsylvania in 2011 at a graduate student social. We struck up a conversation that night and the very next day started writing to each other online. Within three months we were dating and had already developed a shared love of literature, robots, science, and volunteering. In 2014, we got married in our quirky robot-themed wedding and have been adventuring together ever since.

Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other: Mike is quiet, thoughtful, creative, and logical. He likes to prepare for the future and has an uncanny ability to stay calm in any situation. Rachel especially likes when Mike surprises her with treats like homemade ice cream and cake pops. Rachel is outgoing, cheerful, and full of life. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she has a knack for making people feel welcome and appreciated. Mike likes that she brings a sense of joy to ordinary days and appreciates that she’s confident and adventurous.

Our Hobbies and Interests: Together we enjoy science-themed activities, reading, cooking, hiking, visiting horse farms (to see Rachel’s favorite animal), and staying active in our church community. Rachel does yoga, bicycling, plays piano, and sings in the local community choir. Mike gardens, programs, and bakes. We both care deeply about education: Mike volunteers as a high school computer science tutor, and Rachel mentors former students and is active in diversity and inclusion efforts at her school. Each year we road-trip North to see our families in Pennsylvania.

Why We Want to Adopt: Rachel has three adopted siblings, so adoption has been part of our story from the start. We initially planned to have both biological and adopted children, but we have learned that Rachel is unable to carry a baby so we are hoping adoption can help us complete our family. Our hearts are ready to love a child of any gender or race and to provide a loving, safe, and creative environment where they can grow healthy and happy.
